System Administration Skills

  Linux
 
·   Maintain both the CentOS (RHEL) and Ubuntu Linux distributions to run Web sites. Also familiar with Debian, Fedora, Mint, Slackware, and SUSE.
 
·   Routinely use many Unix command line tools to automate routine operations, including crontab, pipes and redirects, grep, sudo, mount/umount, ps, tar and gzip, RPM, the Bash shell, vi, user permissions.
 
·   Maintain routine Linux programs, such as Apache, FTP, ssh. Can compile programs for Linux, including C programs and the Linux kernel itself. Know how to add modules to Linux. Can configure new hardware, such as hard disks, to work on Linux. Can configure Linux to work in a virtual or cloud environment.
 
·   Can establish network connectivity, as well as establish an IP presence on the Internet, configuring Domain Name Services, and setting up a basic firewall.
 
  Python
 
·   Versant in using Python to parse large sets of data, including data from databases, public APIs, XML files. Also use Python to create simple Web services, and to generate static Web pages and RSS feeds. Am passingly familiar with the Django framework.
 
·   Can create Python modules, and design programs to fail gracefully.
 
  MySQL (SQL)
 
·   Can create a database, create a schema for a new database table. Know how to modify tables, and data within tables, and format and cleanse data for populating a database. Can schedule routine backups and perform database migrations.
 
·   Can compose complex queries, and execute them from a variety of programming languages (Python, Perl, PHP).
 
  HTML/CSS/JavaScript
 
·   Designed and maintain an extensive multi-page Web site, using CSS style sheets to format content, and JavaScript to add dynamic functionality. Am learning a number of JavaScript frameworks and libraries, including jQuery, Node.js, and D3.
 
·   Am versant in how to use most HTML tags in well-formed (and human-readable) documents, including those with forms, trables and somewhat complex layouts. Am currently learning HTML5 technologies such as SVG.
 
·   Collect site statistics through Google Analytics, and use Apache, MySQL, and Python, along with HTML/CSS/JavaScript to build and run a blog site from scratch.
 
  PHP and Perl
 
·   Use Perl to sort and reformat complex sets of data, usually with regular expressions.
 
·   Know how to use PHP to get data from a Web form into a database or flat file, and vice versa.
 
  WordPress
 
·   Maintain a neighborhood blog using WordPress, including a number of plug-ins to embed Web services, customize the theme, and run ads. Can also work with similar blogging platforms, such as Joomla.
